Student-designed mural brings colour and community spirit to Northwick Parkside

A wonderful new piece of public art has been unveiled at our Northwick Parkside development in Harrow, helping to transform the local landscape while celebrating the community at the heart of this exciting new neighbourhood.

Located on the edge of the Northwick Parkside development, opposite Northwick Park Hospital, the vibrant mural was designed by Danling Su, an illustration student from the University of Westminster's Harrow Campus. The artwork was created as part of a community competition launched by SNG, to breathe new life into a disused concrete shed within the grounds of the development.

A Community Project with Local Roots

Earlier this year, students from the University of Westminster were invited to submit designs that reflected the character, identity and aspirations of the local area. The aim was to create a public artwork that would brighten the development and provide a positive focal point for residents, visitors, staff and patients at Northwick Park Hospital.

After receiving a number of creative entries, three designs were shortlisted and put to a public vote on SNG's social media channels. The winning design stood out for its thoughtful celebration of community, nature and growth.

Danling Su commented: "Seeing my mural design come to life has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It's exciting to know that something which started as an idea in my sketchbook will become part of a real community.

Throughout the project, I wanted to create a mural that reflects care, connection and a sense of belonging. I hope it brings a small moment of comfort and positivity to everyone who passes through Northwick Park."

Inspired by Growth, Care and Connection

The winning design celebrates the Northwick Parkside community by illustrating the connection between healthcare, education, and home life. Inspired by nature and growth, the mural uses flowers and organic forms to represent different parts of the community growing together. The apple shows how healthcare and education are connected, while the guardian represents care and protection for the community.

The design was brought to life by professional mural artist, Miguel Fons, who spent almost two weeks transforming the once-neglected structure into a colourful community landmark through Danling Su's design.

Miguel Fons said: "Working on this project has been a fantastic experience. The design provided a strong creative vision, and it was rewarding to help turn that vision into a landmark artwork for the community. I hope the mural helps brighten the space and gives people something inspiring and uplifting to connect with each time they pass by."

Creating Places People Are Proud to Call Home

The project reflects SNG's commitment to creating vibrant communities and fostering local connections beyond the homes themselves.

Kalumba Musambachime, Head of Sales for London & East at SNG said: "This project is a fantastic example of community spirit in action. From launching the competition with University of Westminster students to inviting locals to vote for their favourite design online, we're proud to have brought people together to create a lasting piece of public art.

The winning design has transformed what was once a tired and neglected shed into a vibrant landmark that reflects the character and aspirations of the local community. We hope this artwork will be enjoyed by residents, visitors and future generations for many years to come."
